The Many Faces of Brain Fog

Brain fog is an umbrella term for cognitive symptoms that impair daily function. Identifying your specific pattern helps pinpoint the underlying cause — and the most effective treatment.

🌫️
Mental cloudinessA persistent sense that your thinking is sluggish, imprecise, or happening through a filter — even when you're not tired.
💬
Word retrieval problemsStruggling to find the right word mid-sentence, forgetting names instantly, or losing your train of thought while speaking.
📚
Reading & learning difficultyRe-reading the same page multiple times without retaining it. New information simply doesn't stick the way it used to.
⏱️
Slow processing speedReactions feel delayed. Making decisions, solving problems, and responding in conversations all take noticeably longer.
📵
Poor concentrationInability to stay focused on tasks for more than a few minutes despite no screen distractions — even in complete silence.
😶‍🌫️
Depersonalization / disconnectFeeling mentally absent, like you're watching your life from outside — a common but underreported symptom of neuroinflammation.
🧩
Executive function breakdownDifficulty planning, organizing, initiating tasks, or managing multiple priorities — even simple ones that used to be effortless.
😔
Mood alongside cognitionIrritability, mild depression, and low motivation that travel with the cognitive symptoms — classic signs of neurochemical imbalance.

What Is Actually Causing Your Brain Fog?

Cognitive dysfunction isn't random. It always has a physiological cause. Here are the root causes we identify and treat most frequently at Viva.

01
NAD+ Depletion
NAD+ is the coenzyme your neurons use to generate energy, repair DNA damage, and regulate neurotransmitter synthesis. As NAD+ levels decline — which they do by 50% by age 40 — neurons lose the biochemical resources they need to perform cognitive work. The result is exactly what patients describe: slow processing, poor memory consolidation, and mental fatigue. IV NAD+ is the only clinically meaningful way to rapidly restore neuronal NAD+ levels.
02
B12 & B Vitamin Deficiency
B12 is essential for myelin sheath maintenance — the protective coating around your nerve fibers that determines how fast signals travel between neurons. B12 deficiency literally slows your nervous system. Folate and B6 are critical for synthesizing serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters that regulate mood and cognition. Poor absorption (gut issues, medications, alcohol) makes deficiency extremely common even in people who eat well.
03
Dehydration & Electrolyte Imbalance
The brain is 75% water. Even mild dehydration — just 1–2% fluid loss — measurably impairs working memory, attention, and psychomotor speed. In Scottsdale's desert climate, chronic mild dehydration is epidemic. Electrolyte imbalances (especially sodium and magnesium) compound the problem. IV hydration restores optimal cellular fluid balance within minutes, and many patients report cognitive clarity shifting during the session itself.
04
Toxin Overload / Glutathione Depletion
Glutathione is your body's master antioxidant — the primary defense system that neutralizes oxidative stress and toxins before they damage brain tissue. Alcohol consumption, environmental pollutants, processed food, and even intense exercise all deplete glutathione faster than the body can replace it. When glutathione runs low, neuroinflammation rises and cognitive function suffers. IV glutathione (often combined with a vitamin C push) replenishes this rapidly.
05
Hormonal Imbalance
Sex hormones directly regulate cognitive function. Low testosterone in men is associated with reduced spatial cognition, working memory, and mental sharpness. Thyroid dysfunction — even subclinical hypothyroidism — commonly presents as cognitive slowing, poor memory, and the classic "foggy" feeling. Our Optimization program includes comprehensive hormonal panels to identify these imbalances and address them with physician-directed protocols.
06
Post-Illness & Long COVID Fog
Viral infections, including COVID-19, trigger neuroinflammation that can persist for months or years after the acute illness resolves. Post-COVID brain fog is one of the most prevalent and debilitating manifestations of Long COVID — and one of the conditions where IV NAD+ therapy has shown the most compelling anecdotal and early clinical evidence. Combining NAD+, glutathione, and a Myers Cocktail is our standard post-illness cognitive recovery protocol.

Why Your Brain Needs More Than Rest

The common advice for brain fog is "get more sleep, reduce stress, exercise more." That advice treats brain fog as a lifestyle problem. But if your neurons are biochemically depleted — running low on NAD+, B12, or glutathione — no amount of rest will restore function. You're asking a depleted engine to run harder.

NAD+ is the most clinically significant factor in brain fog treatment. As a coenzyme in over 500 enzymatic reactions in the body — the majority of which involve energy metabolism and DNA repair in neurons — NAD+ is not a supplement. It is a fundamental cellular resource. Oral NAD+ precursors (NMN, NR) are partially effective at raising blood NAD+, but IV delivery achieves serum concentrations that oral supplementation cannot match.

Glutathione defends neurons against oxidative stress — the inflammatory process that underlies cognitive decline at both the acute (hangover, illness) and chronic (aging, toxin exposure) level. IV glutathione delivery provides immediate neurological antioxidant support with effects many patients describe as "lifting a weight off my brain."

All Viva cognitive protocols are physician-supervised by Dr. Jerome Cordova, MD — ensuring that treatment selection is based on your specific symptom pattern, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

What to Expect at Your Visit

Step 1
Arrive & Check In
Walk in or book online. Check-in takes under 5 minutes. No referral or prior bloodwork required for most treatments. Our team will review your cognitive symptoms to recommend the most targeted starting point.
Step 2
Symptom Assessment
We distinguish between acute brain fog (dehydration, post-illness, hangover) and chronic cognitive decline (NAD+ depletion, hormonal, inflammatory). This determines whether you start with an immediate-action drip or a more comprehensive diagnostic protocol.
Step 3
IV or Injection Treatment
Relax in our clinic while treatment is administered by a licensed RN. Myers Cocktail and most drips run 30–45 minutes. NAD+ sessions run 1–4 hours depending on dose (higher doses are often split across sessions for optimal tolerance).
Step 4
Notice the Shift
Many patients describe a shift in mental clarity during the NAD+ session itself — a lifting of the fog that sharpens over the following 24–48 hours. B12 and Myers patients typically report improved focus and mental energy the same day. For TRT and hormonal protocols, cognitive improvements build over 4–6 weeks.

"Brain fog is one of the most frustrating conditions because it's invisible — you feel impaired, but nothing shows up on a standard exam. The biochemistry tells a different story. NAD+ depletion, B12 insufficiency, glutathione depletion — these are measurable and treatable. When we address the actual deficiency, patients often describe it as 'turning the lights back on.'"

Brain Fog Treatment FAQ

It depends on the treatment. Many patients report cognitive clarity during or immediately after a NAD+ infusion. Myers Cocktail and hydration IV effects typically appear within a few hours. B12 injection benefits often arrive the same day. For TRT and hormonal protocols, cognitive improvements build over 4–6 weeks as hormone levels normalize. Glutathione push effects are often described as "almost immediate" by patients treating post-illness or toxin-related fog.
The Myers Cocktail addresses nutritional deficiencies — B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin C — that impair cognitive function. It's an excellent first-line treatment for most brain fog patients. NAD+ goes deeper — it replenishes the coenzyme your neurons use to produce energy at the cellular level. For mild-to-moderate brain fog with clear nutritional deficiency patterns, start with Myers. For persistent, chronic, or age-related cognitive decline, NAD+ is typically the more effective intervention.
We have treated many patients with post-COVID cognitive symptoms and anecdotally, the response to IV NAD+ and glutathione protocols has been positive. The mechanism makes sense — COVID triggers neuroinflammation that depletes both NAD+ and glutathione, and IV replenishment addresses both simultaneously. We don't make therapeutic claims about Long COVID specifically, but many patients report meaningful improvement with our cognitive recovery protocols.
Not for most treatments. Myers Cocktail, B12 injection, glutathione, and standard IV drips can be initiated on the same day without prior labs. For TRT and our Optimization programs, comprehensive bloodwork is included as part of the intake. If you want a full diagnostic workup to identify the specific cause of your brain fog, our Optimization program coordinates everything.
Many patients notice improvement after a single session, particularly with NAD+ and Myers Cocktail. For chronic or severe cognitive decline, a series of sessions — typically 3–6 NAD+ infusions over 2–4 weeks — produces more durable improvement. We work with patients to design an appropriate protocol based on symptom severity, response to initial treatment, and practical schedule.
